Research Assignment: Quantum Mechanics & Special Relativity ( 60 marks total)

Introduction: In this unit you learned about some of the fundamental theories, concepts
and experiments that led to our current understanding of how matter, time, space and
the universe act. In this culminating assignment you will use the knowledge you gained
in this unit as well as your own researching skills to further your understanding and to
learn about how modern technologies apply relativity and quantum mechanics in the
real world.
Description: Your task for this assignment is to conduct your own research on the topics
listed below, related to modern physics. Once you have compiled all the information
you need, you will have to organize your information into both a research report and a
Powerpoint presentation. Your Powerpoint presentation should be a condensed version
of your research report. Your research report and presentation should both include
images and text organized in a logical manner that is visually pleasing. You may
organize the report and presentation in any order that you see fit, as long as you clearly
address the specific topics listed below.
Overview:
Your final product for this assignment will comprise 2 different pieces (plus references)
1. Research report. Written report summarizing your findings, with images.
2. Powerpoint presentation. Presentation summarizes your research report,
information is organized and presented in a visually appealing manner.
Note: You must cite all references that you used for your presentation. DO NOT COPY
AND PASTE YOUR INFORMATION. YOU MUST CONDUCT THE RESEARCH AND
COMPILE THE INFORMATION IN YOUR REPORT USING YOUR OWN WORDS AND
UNDERSTANDING.

Section 1: The Theory of Special Relativity: 25 marks total (Application)
