MGT 682
ASSIGNMENT 2 PREPARATION SESSION
- Specific Requirements explained and how to achieve them
- What is a secondary data collection (and how to evaluate
its quality)
- The quality criteria of qualitative research
The assignment
Important formalities:
- Include a completed cover sheet (available from MOLE)
- Use Student Number, MGT682-2 (e.g., 150011001,
MGT682-2) as the documents file name and also as
the assignment title in Turnitin.
If you dont follow these rules a 5 mark penalty will be
applied (and enforced this time!)
####### Also hand in on time!!! On Turnitin on 24rd of May before 12 noon
The assignment general things
- Try to keep within the word count however, if you run
over it is not a big problem
- FOLLOW the instructions as well as you can and have a
look at the marking criteria!
- There are no explicit literature requirements, however you
will very likely need to refer to literature at certain parts of
your assignment (e.g. when discussing validity etc.)
- IMPORTANT: As with all academic papers, you need to make ALL
####### your sources that you use for this assignment explicit! Use the
####### Harvard or APA referencing style.
Specific Requirements
####### 1 Context 200 words
- Please state your research question, your objectives and your research approach. Briefly describe: – Briefly describe your data collection? – Please state: is it a quantitative OR a qualitative study, OR does it involve (mainly) secondary data collection? (If you plan to do more than 1 in your dissertation, then please choose 1 for this assignment). Who are the potential participants? How are they recruited?
How to solve this
####### You can use your dissertation or the study you used for Assignment 1
####### in the winter semester, but you need to make clear this time what your
####### research approach is (deductive? Inductive?) and your objectives need
####### to be clear.
####### If you dont have participants: What is the unit of analysis? How is that
####### selected?
The Specific Requirements can be
found on MOLE in the
Coursework Specification Form.
I just copied from there.
Specific Requirements
####### 2. Data collection and Analysis 500 words
Note: You only need to answer 2a OR 2b here.
- If you plan a quantitative study or a secondary data collection please go to 2a. If you plan a qualitative study please go to 2b.
####### How to solve this
####### Actually the decision also depends on the research approach.
- Are you testing a specific assumption? Is your research positivist?
####### Then preciseness of measurement, generalisability is important
####### quantitative criteria become important.
- Are you exploring something more inductively? Are you interested in a
####### rich dataset? Is your research constructivist/interpretivist? Then
####### qualitative criteria are important.
####### If you have a deductive approach (which most often involves a
####### quantitative study but can sometimes involve a qualitative study as
####### well) use the quantitative criteria
Specific Requirements
- 2a. If you plan a quantitative study or a secondary data collection,
####### please state a hypothesis of your study and name its variables.
- How will you measure these variables? [Which information in the secondary data relates to these variables?] Be as specific as you can!
- Please discuss: how can you ensure reliability and validity of your measurements?
- Which type of scale level do these data/measures possess?
- Which statistical test do you choose to test this hypothesis and why?
How to solve this
- Name the measurement instruments, report cronbach alphas (if
####### available), show that other people have used this strategy to measure
####### these concepts (cite literature),
- Scale level for each of the variables is it nominal, ordinal, interval
####### scaled data?
- Which type of test? See the table in the quantitative analysis session
Specific Requirements
- 2b. If you plan a qualitative study, please describe in detail:
- How is the data in your study collected?
- How will you ensure credibility, transferability, dependability and reflexivity in your
####### study?
- Please describe step-by-step: how will you analyse the data you collected?
- Which information will you report in your results section?
How to solve this
- Please apply the criteria credibility, transferability, dependability and
####### reflexivity to your own research. Dont be general discuss them in the
####### light of your study
- Which technique will you use to analyse your data? (e.g. template
####### analysis?…)
Specific Requirements
3. Ethical issues 350 words
- Please discuss in detail:
- What is the potential harm for the participants? If so, how will this be managed to ensure appropriate protection and well-being of the participants?
- How is data confidentiality handled and how is the data of this research stored?
- Which ethical issues will not be /hardly be affected by this research and why?
- Is consent needed from the participants?
How to solve this
- See the ethics tutorial exercise, use the 6 criteria that were
####### discussed.
- To what do the participants need to give their consent? (e.g. are there
####### audio recordings, observations etc. taking place)
- Its very likely that there will be no harm to participants etc., but you
####### need to explain why and illustrate how each of these (potential)
####### ethical issues will be dealt with.
Is there a risk? How would you deal with this ethical issue?
Harm to participants
Informed consent
Confidentiality & anonymity
Data protection
Invasion of privacy
Deception
Specific Requirements
- Information sheet draft 450 words
- Note: You only need to answer 4a OR 4b here.
- 4a: If you are doing a quantitative or qualitative data collection: Please design an information sheet about the data collection, providing enough information for the participants so they can give informed consent.
- 4b: If you are doing a secondary data collection: Please design an information sheet about your study that could be sent to the organisations or people from whom the data originally came from.
####### How to solve this
- Please have a look at the ethics tutorial exercise and the additional
####### information provided on MOLE. Your information sheet needs to answer to
####### specific questions, illustrated on the research ethics website. We look for
####### those so keep it structured!
- There is no penalty if the word count on your information sheet exceeds 450
