Assessment Task 2 Individual Case Scenario (20 marks)
Task description: This individual task reinforces topics covered in the subject focussing on organisational and destination insight and the relevance of an organisations corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable business management on a destination in a developing country. The theoretical applications, practical implications and management principles used to support a sustainable destination are considered and are key issues to investigate.
Students will analyse the case scenario on Uganda and identify the
destination^1 s key stakeholders within the tourism and hospitality
system. Specific focus will be on the CSR business practice of two
key stakeholders:

The task is to:
i) identify, categorise and describe the key responsibilities an
organisation^2 takes when embracing CSR principles and/or
corporate governance (incorporating social entrepreneurship,
integration of the triple bottom line and CSR principles)
ii) establish what the organisation / intermediary is doing to
reduce its impact and increase its CSR to support the
destination and its stakeholders (precaution^3 ).
iii) establish if CSR policies and promotions are verifiable and
accredited (transparency)

This task consists of two (2) questions.
The Case Study analysis should include:
o a short introduction
o answers to the two (2) questions
o at least three recommendations for the destinations future direction.
Students are expected to write:
o Approximately 500-600 words per question (1000-1200 words total).
You are required to undertake limited wider reading. At least 2-3 scholarly
references (in addition to the textbook) are required. Internet resources such as
Wikipedia and/or quickmba.com are not considered adequate references. In addition,
you may choose to refer to the website that relates to the case study as provided. All
references must be formatted using APA Style.

The Case Study: "Uganda: Sustainable Tourism" can be accessed on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HSIzOdca4w (first 11 minutes only) or on LMS.
The video provides an overview of the developing tourism industry in Uganda. It is a documentary on a six-year pilot project supported by the University of Manitoba. The Ugandan community, who exist in an ecologically sensitive area, are mentored into ensuring they develop their environmental assets including wildlife in a sustainable way. It discusses the development of strategies that were identified to support its tourism industry while protecting the biodiversity, breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife that tourists come to see.
While the Case Scenario focusses on many of the topics/concepts covered in THT2114, it has an emphasis on the following core themes:

Development and Management of Sustainable Destinations
USING EXAMPLES FROM THE CASE STUDY PROVIDED ANSWER THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS:

Question 1:
Using examples from the Case Study, discuss the key issues and challenges in managing the destination in terms of the following two (2) principles of sustainable development^4 – Precaution and Transparency – in context to CSR business practice of:

Question 2:
Using some of the key concepts of sustainable development and examples from the case study, identify how an intermediary (for example Intrepid Travel) can successfully support the 4Ps – People, the Planet, Profits and Progress (4Ps).
Discuss using two (2) traditional business principles that reinforces successful management relations^5.
The suitability of suppliers to engage in a sustainable supply chain;
The readiness of intermediaries to support sustainable initiatives
Provide at least two recommendations for the destinations future direction.

- The image perceived by consumers, suppliers and other stakeholders;
- The legitimacy of the environmental/social positioning of the org/destination (is it real or superficial?).
- The acceptability of sustainable products and services to customers; 5 The suitability of its suppliers to engage in a sustainable supply chain;
- The readiness of intermediaries to support sustainable initiatives;
- The consumer expectations and perceptions of benefits that sustainable products and services offered.
