Careful planning is key to every successful strategic communication effort. Using the 8-Step Strategic Communications Planning Matrix found on pages 15-16 of your text (and attached to this post), your assignment is to select a scenario/action that must be communicated using an organization where you belong, such as a job, a church, a sports team, etc.). It doesn’t have to be something that is really going to be communicated, but for the purposes of background and doing
research, it is important to choose an organization that actually exists.
A couple tips:
● Don’t choose something too broad. Communicating about world peace may seem
great, but the complexity/scope would be more than you might want to tackle in
● Make sure that your objectives are communications objectives, not business objectives. If your goal is to find volunteers for a homeless shelter, don’t use
objectives that talk about creating a training plan or building a budget. Your
objectives should be about communicating information.
Once you have selected the scenario, your plan MUST follow steps 1-5 of the Planning Matrix.
For the purposes of this class, I am not concerned about steps 6-8. The planning matrix details
the order in which you should do the steps and the scope of each step (some are just one
sentence; some can be much longer). Don’t write a 2-page core problem/opportunity statement!
The idea is to narrow and focus.
Organize your paper according to the steps. Start with a Research section that breaks out
Background, Situation Analysis and Core Problem/Opportunity. Then move into the Action
Planning section that includes Goal and Objectives, and so on.
If you use outside sources, they must be cited and referenced with proper APA style. I am not
going to give a word or page limit to this, but you should be able to complete this work in 3-5
pages. If you are shorter than that, make sure that you have included all the steps; if you are
longer than that, make sure that you have edited carefully.
All assignments must be submitted through the assignment as Microsoft Word docs.
Again, even though this is not due until the end of the class, you will probably find it helpful to
build week by week.
Here is our topic for the communication plan.
South Jersey-based Spread the Love Foundation (STLF) focuses on preventing teen suicide by
educating students and adults about mental illness. The foundation was created by Megan and
Carolyn Coburn, who unfortunately lost their sister and daughter Samantha to suicide at 19 years
old. They have focused on destigmatizing mental illness and addiction struggles by educating
and encouraging people to seek help.In addition, they work with local schools to bring awareness
to the suicide epidemic affecting teens in this generation.

To educate this issue to a larger audience, the foundation needs to be more engaged on their
social media pages and promote their programs. To amplify its visibility and awareness efforts,
STLF must increase its marketing power to help them make more connections with local school
districts. My communication plan is to assist Spread the Love Foundation to increase its
publicity in the local district and make a more powerful impact on students, teachers, staff, and
residents in South Jersey. By doing so, there will be more people who will learn about
psychological disorders that some of their loved ones may suffer from so that there will be less
