MIS 111 Applied Business Project 1

####### Assignment Overview

Your task is to create a formal report for an assigned publically-traded company from a technical analysis perspective. Your project report will include a formatted chart showing stock prices for the company and two competitors in the same industry sector, a graph showing the same stock prices for all three (3) companies, a second chart showing basic company information along basic investment metrics, a basic history of the company and its industry, and an assessment of the company and its potential as a financial investment.

####### Data Sources

The ticker symbol and name of your assigned company can be found on D2L in your grade book in the ABP Ticker item. Using your ticker symbol, we recommend using https://finance.yahoo.com to find information about the company and two of its industry competitors. Other sources, such as Google Finance, and CNN Money, or other commercial investment services are also acceptable. However, if you use another source, be aware that the names used for some financial measures used in this document may not be the same.

####### IMPORTANT NOTE

####### The figures and tables shown as examples in this document are taken

####### from prior assignments and should ONLY be used as a guideline for the

####### graphical style expected for the task. The content of any figure or

####### table should be based exclusively on the information provided in the

####### guidelines for this assignment.

IMPORTANT NOTE
To receive full credit for this assignment, you must use
your assigned company, as shown in the ABP Ticker
item in your MIS 111 grade book on D2L

####### Section 1: Current Company Profile

Task 1.1: Company Governance

For Task 1.1 , create a table describing the governance of the company. The following information should be organized as a table ( you may create this table directly in your report, or you can format the table in Excel and transfer it to your report ) that includes:

 Companys legal company name
Location (city and state) of its corporate headquarters
Name of the most key executive (typically, President or CEO) of the company
Calendar date (day and month) when the companys fiscal year ends (see the
financials section on the Annual Data Balance Sheet)
Exchange where the stock is traded and companys trading (Ticker) symbol
Companys industry sector and industry classification (see the Company
Profile on the Yahoo Summary page)

IMPORTANT NOTE
The figures and tables shown as examples in this document are taken from prior assignments and should
ONLY be used as a guideline for the graphical style expected for the task. The content of any figure or
table should be based exclusively on the information provided in the guidelines for this assignment.

Task 1. 2 : Financial Profile

For Task 1.2 , create a second table showing your companys financial profile with the following information, using the information from a day since this semester began (i.e., on or after August 20th, 2018 ). Please note, Yahoo Finance has this information on the summary sheet for each company for the current date, so using the date you are completing your project would be a good strategy. If you decide to pick a date in the past, it will be much more difficult to find.

The date (after August 20, 2018) you select for your financial profile
For that specific trading day, show the following:
o Current Share Price (at the close)
o Gain/loss of the share price (at the close) from the prior days close
o Daily volume / average volume
Using the same specific trading day, show the following:
o 52 week range (high and low) with respect to the date selected
o Current Market Capitalization on the date selected
o Number of Traded Shares (Volume) on the date selected
o Companys Beta (volatility relative to market changes)
o Percentage of shares owned by institutions
o Number of employees (shown on the Summary page)

table should be based exclusively on the information provided in the guidelines for this assignment.

Task 1.3: Investment Assessment

For Task 1.3, write a 150 word original (i.e., in your own words) assessment (range: 1 25 17 5 words) of your company that addresses the following investment question: Based on the trading activity (stock price and volume) in the prior 6 (six) months and your stocks current share price relative to its 52-week price range, do you think that investors are generally viewing your companys stock as a buy, sell, or hold opportunity? Be sure to justify your answer.

For Task 1.3, you can consider any factor you consider most significant for your firm, such as recent financial performance, product sales, recommendations of financial analysts, press releases by your company, or other published news sources.

When creating your information profile tables for Tasks 1 .1 or 1.2, be sure to include an appropriate caption below your fundamentals table (e.g., Table 1. Corporate Governance, Table 2. Financial Profile, and a reference to your source), as shown in the examples above.

####### Section 2: Historical Stock Analysis and Fundamentals

Task 2.1: Financial Metrics

For Task 2.1, create a spreadsheet table for the most recent three reported fiscal years 2015, 2016, and 2017. The data for each fiscal year is shown as either As of on the balance sheet or 12 months ending on the Income Statement or Cash Flow) for your assigned company. (If your company has not closed the fiscal year ending in 2017, you may use the data for the fiscal years 2014, 2015, and 2016.)

Your table should report the following financial metrics for all three columns. Values for some metrics may be show in thousands or millions, so be sure to include an appropriate note about your values.

Also, note that the metrics listed below do not match the metric shown in the sample figure. Be sure to include the metrics shown below in your report.

From Balance Sheet (in most cases, show all amounts in millions)
o Cash and Cash Equivalents
o Inventory
o Total Current Assets
o Accounts Payable
o Total Liabilities
o Total Shareholder Equity

From Income Statement

o Total Revenue
o Gross Profit
o Selling General and Administrative
o Operating Income or Loss
o Net Income

From Cash Flow Statement

o Total Cash Flow From Operating Activities
o Change In Cash and Cash Equivalents

From historical stock data (see: https://finance.yahoo.com/ )

o Stock price and volume on the closing date of the three fiscal years
shown. (Note: be sure to use the last trading date in the fiscal year.)

table should be based exclusively on the information provided in the guidelines for this assignment.

Task 2.2: Media Perspectives

For Task 2.2, select one current events news article (from the News section on Yahoo Finance Summary page) about your company that was published within the last 6 months that discusses an issue that would be important to investors.

Based on the historical trading data available for your assigned company and the information from your news article, write a 15 0 word analysis (range: 125 175 words) describe the source of the information (e.g., the companys public relations office, an independent business analyst, or a public sector regulatory agency) and what impact, if any, the issue discussed in the article had on your stocks performance and share price. Be sure to include a formal bibliographic citation to your news article following your analysis, including the date referenced for online sources.

####### Section 3: Competitive Analysis

We strongly recommend using Excel to complete the tasks in section 3.

Task 3.1: Stock Price Analysis

For Task 3.1, you will evaluate how your company has performed over the period December 31, 201 6 to December 31, 2017 in comparison to two (2) of its direct industry competitors. If you need help finding industry competitors, try searching the NASDAQ website (https://www.nasdaq.com) for your ticker symbol and selecting the Competitors view for a list of peer companies.

The format of your data table must be formatted as follows:

Your table should include a general title line, above three columns, each with
its own column-specific title line, as described below.
The stock prices should be formatted as currency.
The main title should be a merged cell that contains a centered descriptive title
highlighted with a filled background color. As you pick your background color,
consider the readability (contrast) between the text and the shading of the
background in the report you submit for grading, which might be different
than the way the table appears on your computer.

Column 1: will contain the date for each historical quote (the closing price for the last trading day of December 2016, as well as for closing price for the last trading day in each month from January 2017 to December 2017 ).

Note: A trading day is when stocks are bought and sold on the market for the
stock. Since stocks are not traded on weekends or national holidays, the last
trading day of each month may not be the last calendar day of the month.
Formatting: The header for this column should be Closing Date, and the
dates should be formatted as Month Day, Year format (e.g., April 29 , 2016).

Column 2: will contain the historical closing stock prices for your assigned company. The header will be the companys ticker symbol, followed by the stock prices correlating with the dates for each month shown in the left column.

Column 3: will contain the corresponding historical closing stock prices for a direct industry competitor of your assigned company (you may select the company).

Column 4: will contain the historical closing stock prices for a second direct industry competitor of your assigned company (you may select the company).

As with all tables and figures, be sure to include an appropriate caption below your comparison table (e.g., Table 3. Competitor Comparison Data and your source), as shown in the style example of your table shown below:

table should be based exclusively on the information provided in the guidelines for this assignment.

Task 3.2: Competitive Stock Price Graph

For task 3.2, you will use the stock price data table developed in Task 3 .1 to create a stock price comparison graph. Your graph should be formatted as a line graph (as shown below). The easiest way to create a chart in Excel is to select the data table you created in Task 3.1, including each column header, the click the Line icon in the Charts section of the Insert tab.

Be sure you add appropriate captions to the X-axis (date) and Y-axis (closing price), as well as an appropriate chart title. In addition, be sure to include an appropriate caption below your stock price analysis figure (e.g., Figure 1. Stock Price Analysis and your source), as shown in the style example below:

Figure 1 Walmart Stock Price Analysis Chart
(Source: https://www.google.com/finance referenced on 8/27/2017)

IMPORTANT IMPLEMENTATION NOTE FOR TASK 3.2: The range used for the horizontal (date) axis in your stock price graph will, by default, most likely use a continuous date range, rather than the exact closing dates of each month. Be sure to change your chart axis formatting to have the specific dates you have entered to show up along the bottom of the graph using the Format Axis tool.

####### Task 4 : Assessing your stock the Warren Buffet Way

For this task, you will evaluate your assigned companys investment potential as an attractive company using concepts related to Warren Buffetts investment strategies, who seeks first to identify an excellent business and then to acquire the firm if the price is right. Buffett is a buy-and-hold investor who prefers to hold the stock of a good company earning 15% year after year over jumping from investment to investment with the hope of higher, short-term gains.

The article The Buffett Approach to Valuing Stocks published in Pepperdine Universitys Graziadio Business Review (a link to the article is included below), Steven Ferraro discusses the process famed investor Warren Buffett is reported to go through to determine the intrinsic value of a publicly traded stocks.

####### (see: http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/2010/08/the-buffett-approach-to-valuing-stocks/ )

For Tasks 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 , you will select three of the ten criteria from Warren Buffets methods shown below (i.e., of the ten criteria 4a through 4j, you will only need to select three for your analysis, tasks 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3, respectively), and you should evaluate your assigned stock based upon that investment perspective.

For each answer to tasks 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 , you must write a 150 word analysis (range: 125 175 words) using a specific quantitative or qualitative criterion to justify your analysis in your own words. In other words, your answer for each of the tasks 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 should each be 150 words in length (450 words total).

Criterion 4c is an example of a quantitative criterion, so a chart of earnings reports over several fiscal years would be an example of an appropriate measure. Conversely, Criterion 4d is an example of a qualitative criterion, so an appropriate measure supporting your analysis might be to discuss your companys product marketing strategy by citing sources from recent product announcements, business acquisitions, or key executives hired by the company.

####### Select three (3) of the following criteria adapted from material

####### originally published in the book Warren Buffet Way.

Criterion 4a: Consumer monopoly or commodity?

Buffett seeks out consumer monopolies selling products in which there is no effective competitor, either due to a patent or brand name or similar intangible that makes the product unique. Investors can seek these companies by identifying the manufacturers of products that seem indispensable. Consumer monopolies typically have high profit margins because of their unique niche; however, simple screens for high margins may simply highlight firms within industries with traditionally high margins. For our screen, we look for companies with operating margins and net profit margins above their industry norms. Additional screens for strong earnings and high return on equity will also help to identify consumer monopolies. Follow-up examinations should include a detailed study of the firms position in the industry and how it might change over time.

Criterion 4b: Do you understand how the business works?

Buffett only invests in industries that he can grasp. While you cannot screen for this factor, you should only further analyze the companies passing all screening criteria that operate in areas you understand.

Criterion 4c: Is the company conservatively financed?

Buffett seeks out companies with conservative financing. Consumer monopolies tend to have strong cash flows, with little need for long-term debt. We screen for companies with total liabilities relative to total assets that are below the median for their respective industry. Alternative screens might look for low debt to capitalization or low debt to equity.

Criterion 4d: Are earnings strong and do they show an upward trend?

Buffett looks for companies with strong, consistent, and expanding earnings. We screen for companies with seven-year earnings per share growth greater than 75% of all firms. To help indicate that earnings growth is still strong, we also require that the three-year earnings growth rate be higher than the seven-year growth rate. Buffett seeks out firms with consistent earnings. Follow-up examinations should include careful examination of the year-by-year earnings per share figures. As a simple screen to exclude companies with more volatile earnings, we screen for companies with positive earnings for each of the last seven years and latest 12 months.

Criterion 4e: Does the company stick with what it knows?

A company should invest capital only in those businesses within its area of expertise. This is a difficult factor to screen for on a quantitative level. Before investing in a company, look at the companys past pattern of acquisitions and new directions. They should fit within the primary range of operation for the firm.

Criterion 4f: Has the company been buying back its shares?

Buffett prefers that firms reinvest their earnings within the company, provided that profitable opportunities exist. When companies have excess cash flow, Buffett favors shareholder-enhancing maneuvers such as share buybacks. While we do not screen for this factor, a follow-up examination of a company would reveal if it has a share buyback plan in place.

Criterion 4g: Have retained earnings been invested well?

Earnings should rise as the level of retained earnings increase from profitable operations. Other screens for strong and consistent earnings and strong return on equity help to the capture this factor.

Criterion 4h: Is the companys return on equity above average?

Buffett considers it a positive sign when a company is able to earn above-average returns on equity. Mary Buffett indicates that the average return on equity for the last 30 years is approximately 12%. We created a custom field that calculated the average return on equity over the last seven years. We then filter for companies with average return on equity above 12%.

Criterion 4i: Is the company free to adjust prices to inflation?

True consumer monopolies are able to adjust prices to inflation without the risk of losing significant unit sales. This factor is best applied through a qualitative examination of the companies and industries passing all the screens.

Criterion 4j: Does the company need to constantly reinvest in capital?

Retained earnings must first go toward maintaining current operations at competitive levels, so the lower the amount needed to maintain current operations, the better. This factor is best applied through a qualitative examination of the company and its industry. However, a screen for high relative levels of free cash flow may also help to capture this factor.

General Applied Business Project Report Guidelines

####### Citing Sources

You should always cite the source of any data you use, whether its narrative information or numeric financial performance information. If your source is from a document you found online, your citation must include the sources URL and the date you referenced the material. Although it does not follow the requirements for style sheets used on formal paper (i.e., MLA, APA, etc.), for our applied business projects, you are only required to include the root URL. An example of a citation that you would use for historical quote data from http://www.google.com/finance would be:

####### (Source: http://www.google.com/finance accessed on 2/4/2011)

####### Using the ABP-1 Assignment Report Template Provided on D2L

It is strongly recommended that you use the provided Word template, as it includes the required E-tegrity statement, section headers, and other required formatting. Be sure you update the header and footer information with your name and UANetid.

####### Business Report Deliverable

You MUST submit your business report using the submission links provided in the ABP-1 folder on D2L using a PDF file format.

Your report must include all elements of the report template, including the E-Tegrity statement (shown below), as well as report header, footer and title block, and the task section headers shown in the report template file. If you elect not to use the template, you are still responsible for all of the required elements shown in the template, and will lose credit for missing items or it if your report is not professionally formatted.

####### Major Penalties

Not submitting your report as a PDF document. Even if we can open and grade
your assignment, if you submit your report in any other format (e.g., Word or
Pages), a 10 point penalty will be deducted from your score.
Submitting the wrong document, a blank template, or a document that cannot
be opened. You will not receive any credit for the assignment, but you will be
allowed to submit a report for partial credit with a -40% penalty.
Not including the E-Tegrity statement in your report, as shown the template
file. Not including an E-tegrity statement is a - 20 % penalty
Not using your assigned company, as shown in the ABP Ticker item in your
MIS 111 grade book on D2L. Using an incorrect company is a -40% penalty.

####### Assignment Due Date: Thursday, September 13th, 2018

Please refer to the assignment calendar for additional opportunities you have to submit your report using the No Penalty or Partial Credit submission links.

Please note that during periods of peak assignment submission activity (especially within 30 minutes immediately prior to when an assignment is due), system performance for D2L may be significantly slower than other times.

Also, all assignments are due based on the system clock for D2L, not your personal device. Moreover, please remember that that Arizona does NOT observe daylight savings time, and the assignment deadline time is based on local Arizona time.

Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to submit your assignments early, preferably before 11:00pm. Since it is solely your responsibility to ensure that your assignments are fully uploaded prior to their published deadlines, no extensions will be given due to slow system performance, network problems, or any other technology issue impacting your ability to upload your report prior to the deadline.

IMPORTANT NOTE
To be accepted, the upload process (uploading your
report and D2L sending your confirmation email) must
be completed before 11:59pm on the Due Date.
